Looking for the right cosmetic or plastic surgeon?
Always keep in mind that this small decision can affect your whole life,
so it’s best that you entrust this to a person whom you can trust with your life.
Here are some tips to help you out:

Tip #1: Get recommendations from trustworthy people.
If you know of any friends or family members who had work done before, then ask them for plastic surgeon recommendations. They can give you honest feedback on that surgeon’s practice, from initial consultation down to recovery.
You may also read online reviews, but make sure that they’re legit. Look for consistency in their patient testimonials, as well as before and after photos of their previous patients.

Tip #2: Look for board certification.
Did you know that the government does not require surgeons to be specifically trained in the procedures that they offer?
You can be talking to a general surgeon with no plastic surgery training yet who offers rhinoplasty procedures.
Make sure that you ask your plastic surgeon if he is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, as this is the only certifying board officially recognized in the USA.

Tip #3: Check out the plastic surgery specialist’s experience.
Some cosmetic surgeons specialize in breast procedures, while others are more versed in full body procedures like tummy tucks and mommy makeovers.
When looking for a plastic surgeon, you should look at his wealth of experience on the specific procedure that you are planning to get. Ask him about his training on that procedure, how many years he has been doing it, and how many times he has performed it.

Tip #4: Choose a plastic surgeon who has a good aesthetic sense.
They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and that rings true even for plastic surgery.
Take a look at before and after photos of your plastic surgeon’s previous patients to see if you like his aesthetic sense. Make sure that you pay close attention to patients that have similar qualities to you – like same facial structure, same concerns, same breast size, and same body shape.

Tip #5: Familiarize yourself with the operating facility.
It’s also important to know where your procedure will be performed, as this is essential for your safety. Some plastic surgeons have their own operating facilities in their clinics, while others go to accredited hospitals to perform the procedure.
If your surgery won’t be performed in an ideal setting like a hospital, ask your cosmetic surgeon what the facility is and whether it’s duly certified by the AAAASF, AAAHC, or JCAHO.
SCHEDULE YOUR FREE CONSULTATION

Tip #6: Consider your plastic surgeon’s staff as well.
Once you decide to get plastic surgery, you won’t be dealing with your plastic surgeon alone. In fact, you might find yourself interacting with his staff more, which is why you need to feel comfortable with your surgeon’s team as well.
The staff should be friendly and helpful to you. Other professionals should be registered as well, like your nurse and anesthesiologist. Look for a board-certified anesthesiologist or a certified registered nurse anesthetist to administer your anesthesia.

Tip #7: Ask questions during consultation.
It’s imperative that you meet with your surgery specialist for an initial consultation so that you can evaluate him personally.
Don’t be scared to ask questions. How many tummy tucks has he done before? How much does it cost? Does he offer any financing options or incentives?
It’s a good way to explore your surgeon’s past work and communicate your expectations so that he can deliver the results you want.

Tip #8: Explore multiple plastic surgery specialists.
There are a lot of cosmetic surgeons that you can choose from. It’s best to schedule consultations with two or three surgeons so that you can gauge their capabilities.
Even if you’re already impressed with the first plastic surgery specialist you consulted, a second opinion from another surgeon is valuable. Take your time and don’t be in a hurry to find the right plastic surgery specialist.

Tip #9: Know your insurance coverage.
Some plastic surgeries, like functional breast reduction and rhinoplasty, may be covered by your insurance policy.
If you qualify for insurance coverage, talk to your insurance company and get a list of plastic surgery specialists who participate in your plan. Doing this can help you narrow down your choices.

Tip #10: Listen to your gut feeling.
It’s not enough that you find a knowledgeable, experienced, and board-certified plastic surgery specialist. You also have to make sure that he has a kind, polite, and gentle bedside manner.
Go to the doctor with whom you feel most comfortable with. Avoid ones who pressure you into undergoing plastic surgery, rushes you into deciding, withholds the risks of surgery, or delegates most of the care to others.
